“You see, then, oh king,” continued the vizier, “what happens when one is too precipitate. Truly, it is not praiseworthy, and it will make you repent your actions. Believe me, I am trying to give you true advice and loyal counsel.”

When the king heard his story, he canceled the slaying of his son, but on the sixth day, his favorite concubine appeared carrying a knife in her hand and said to him, “I want you to know, my lord, that unless you listen to my complaint and protect my honor against these ministers who have banded together against me, I shall kill myself with this knife, and my blood will testify against you on the Day of Doom. Indeed, they pretend that women are full of tricks and malice and perfidy, but they plan to defeat me and prevent the king from doing justice. Still, I shall prove to you that men are more perfidious than women with this story about a king and how he gained access to the wife of a merchant.”
